Isuzu Motors Limited and Cummins will work together in order to develop and build a battery electric demonstration truck addressed to the North American market. The announcement seems to be quite an important milestone along a path that started almost three years agoin 2019, when the Isuzu Cummins Powertrain Partnership (ICPP) was formed. According to the official statement, Cummins will integrate the Cummins PowerDrive6000 into Isuzu’s F-Series truck and will pilot the truck with prominent North American fleets beginning in 2022.

Following a successful demonstration and pilot phase, Isuzu will explore opportunities to commercialize medium-duty, battery-electric trucks with Cummins-powered systems across North America. “We are excited to be working with Isuzu to accelerate decarbonization within the partnership“, said Amy Davis, Vice President and President of New Power at Cummins. “It’s through our joint commitment in innovation that we provide our customers with safe, reliable zero-emissions solutions“.

As addressed in Isuzu Environmental Vision 2050, we will advance global environmental actions including reducing greenhouse emissions and securing a prosperous and sustainable society. As part of the path to carbon neutrality, it is significant for us to start this joint BEV prototype project in North America. Through our partnership, we commit to continuing to explore further opportunities in the next generation power source, including electric powertrain technologies in addition to the existing powertrain collaboration“, added Koichi Seto, Director of the Board, and Senior Executive Officer at Isuzu.

Cummins and Rush Enterprises share joint venture on natural gas

Moreover, as a further proof of Cummins’ efforts towards a more sustainable mobility, the Columbus-based company has recently announced the acquisition of 50% of Momentum Fuel Technologies, previously fully owned by primary commercial vehicle provider Rush Enterprises. So, Cummins and Rush now share a joint venture that will seek to enhance production of near-zero emissions natural gas powertrains by manufacturing Cummins-branded natural gas fuel delivery systems for the commercial vehicle market in North America.

The joint venture will offer aftermarket support through Rush Truck Centers dealerships and Cummins distributors which will be able to service both the engine and the fuel delivery system. The partnership between Cummins and Rush Enterprises is supposed to benefit customers by providing them with access to an extensive CNG vehicle parts and service network. Besides, both Cummins’ and Rush Enterprises’ respective networks, which together represent over 250 locations in the US and Canada, will be equipped with certified technicians and access to a comprehensive CNG vehicle parts inventory.
