FPT Industrial has been awarded the first Alternative Engine Award thanks to the design and specifications of the XCursor 13. The ceremony was held in the Quadriportico Hall of BolognaFiere during the EIMA International. We see internal combustion technology as the bridge of the energy transition. The design of the Alternative Engine Award requires a common crankcase and almost all its components. Ideally, it should run with all the following fuels: diesel, HVO and biodiesel, CNG/LNG, hydrogen. The AEA must be an agnostic, flexible and multifuel engine platform. These statements perfectly fit the features of the FPT Industrial XCursor 13.

The Alternative Engine Award in the words of FPT Industrial

Andrea Abbà, FPT’s product marketing manager, made this comment after the presentation of the XCursor 13 at Iveco’s Model Year 2024. Find here the full interview, published on POWERTRAIN International March 2024 issue. A short summary follows. “Reducing fuel consumption was our North Star. To stick to this input, we revolutionized the engine starting from the very engine block, whose material changed from cast iron to compacted graphite iron. We also implemented a new valve actuation system to maximize braking power, which allows vehicle engineers to avoid fitting a retarder on many applications. We resized the crankshaft and used connecting rod journals and crankpin journals of a smaller diameter; plus, we added an electronically controlled dual flow ball bearing turbo, which optimizes air flow and thus also fuel consumption. The common rail pressure gets from 2200 to 2500 bar. We also made variations to the Peak Cylinder Pressure, raising it to 250 bar. The diesel and gas consumption is around 9/10% less compared to the MY 2019.”

Quoting Daniele Pozzo

Daniele Pozzo, Head of Marketing & Product Management at FPT Industrial, stated: “We are proud of this important achievement for our XCursor 13. Winning the first edition of the Alternative Engine Award confirms that the decision to invest in a multi-energy approach is the right one. The XCursor 13 is a key player in this strategy, given its multi-fuel versatility and the possibility of seeing it play a leading role in both on-road and off-road applications. The great work done in the development and constant updating of the engine makes it certain to play a leading role in the future, ready to meet market demands and changes.”
