Last year, we told you about the introduction of the 370X excavator—equipped with Cummins’ 8.9-liter engine—to JCB’s portfolio. So, we couldn’t miss the chance to tell you about its first rigorous work in the quarry.

The Cummins L9 is what drives the tracks and bucket of the JCB 370X

The 9-liter Cummins engine isn’t just a favorite of JCB in the earthmoving sector. Looking back through our archives, we found the QSL9 in the driveline of Hyundai‘s HL965 wheel loader in 2017. Also in the East, it holds a prominent position among the engines used by China’s LiuGong. This six-cylinder engine has allowed JCB to climb the power curve by 14% compared to the previous JS370, delivering 240 kilowatts (322 horsepower) at 1,700 rpm. This ensures the movement of up to 4.5 additional tons of material per liter of fuel. This engine is also available in the natural gas version.

In Italy, between the Renaissance city of Mantua and Lake Garda

The quarry is located in Goito, on the slopes of the Mantuan morainic hills. The company that enlisted the Cummins-powered JCB excavator is Speranza Giorgio from Cerea, in the province of Verona. This company has been active for over four decades in the agromechanical sector and is now a key player in earthmoving.

Speranza Giorgio has been active for almost 50 years, and I personally represent the third generation. We’ve been operating in the agromechanical sector for a long time, and now also in earthmoving. In recent years, we’ve expanded our activities, and the choice of the JCB 370X perfectly meets our new needs,” states Giorgio Speranza, owner of the company. “With the JCB 370X tracked excavator, we are opening a new chapter for our company. It’s modern, fast, quiet, and guarantees excellent daily performance.

Three working modes

The machine boasts three working modes to optimize digging, lifting, or low-regime work. Engine Auto-Stop and Auto-Idle functions are also standard, reducing fuel consumption to a minimum and further increasing TCO.

The optimization of fuel consumption makes this machine cutting-edge in terms of productivity and sustainability. The 370X also offers real-time monitoring of all fluid levels on the in-cab display and benefits from extended service intervals.

I’ve been working with the JCB 370X excavator for a month now, and I appreciate its hydraulics, comfort, and visibility,” says Alessandro Signoretto, an operator at Speranza Giorgio. “For the type of excavation we face in the quarry, this machine is ideal. In just one day, for example, I managed to load 160 trucks of mixed material. It’s powerful, fast, and incredibly quiet: a perfect machine to effectively tackle even the most intense days.
