mtu PowerPacks for Alpha Trains
Rolls-Royce completes its largest contract for the overhaul of mtu PowerPacks in Germany. Overhaul of mtu PowerPacks throughout the entire service life of Alpha Trains’ diesel railcar fleet (Alstom Coradia Lint, Bombardier Talent, Siemens Desiro)
Rolls-Royce Power Systems is still cooperating with Alpha Trains. The European leading locomotive and train leasing company has signed a long-term framework agreement covering around 700 overhauls of mtu PowerPacks. The agreement covers the entire service life of Alpha Trains’ Coradia Lint, Talent and Desiro diesel multiple units, which are powered by mtu PowerPacks.

The contract ensures that the mtu underfloor drive systems will be maintained technically and economically throughout the remaining service life of Alpha Trains’ diesel multiple units. Maintenance schedules will be tailored to Alpha Trains and its customers. Furthermore, technical solutions will be developed to prevent premature obsolescence. Components will remain available in the long term and can be planned for in advance.
Rolls-Royce Power Systems has introduced the EU ECM 4 maintenance certification at its technology centre in Magdeburg, which specializes in the standard remanufacturing of mtu products. ECM 2 certification is set to follow by the end of 2026, which requires in-depth expertise in cost-effectiveness and continuous improvement. These overhauls contribute to high technical availability of the rolling stock and support reliable rail operations.
Andreas Görtz, President of the Mobile & Sustainable Business Unit at Rolls-Royce Power Systems, explained: “It is important for us to be a long-term and reliable industrial partner for Alpha Trains. By investing in service engineering and introducing the EU maintenance certifications ECM 2 and 4, we are laying the foundations for high quality standards and high availability in railway operations.”

Jörg Hagemeyer, Engineering Director of the Passenger division at Alpha Trains, commented: “With this framework agreement, we are sending a clear signal regarding the quality and high availability of our diesel multiple units. Together with Rolls-Royce, we are creating a comprehensive, worry-free package for our customers and operators. We are enhancing the appeal of our fleet and ensuring that the propulsion systems of our diesel multiple units remain efficient and reliable in operation over the long term.”
Lukas Köhler, Senior Vice President Sales and Service Germany at Rolls-Royce Power Systems, added: “By concluding this framework agreement, Alpha Trains and Rolls-Royce are contributing to efficient and sustainable rail transport in Europe. Here we have created a platform through which we can offer optimal service for the Alpha Trains multiple units with mtu propulsion systems.”
