Anthony van der Ley is Cema’s president. He took the place of a man who is very familiar to the frequenters of the Tractor of the year. This is Richard Markwell, and the transition is indicative of a strategic turn towards digitization and 4.0. In fact, the passage of charge occurred from the Vice President and Managing Director of Massey Ferguson EAME, to who has been at the top of Lemken since 2012. Van der Ley started in his new position last Wednesday, June 20, on the occasion of the assembly of the association. The presidential term has a duration of two years, after which it will be re-elected only once.

The words of the new president

«For me it is a great honor to assume the Presidency of the Association that represents the voice of the European agricultural machinery industry. I intend to continue the work done by my predecessor Richard Markwell, cooperating with the main institutions with the aim of strengthening the leadership of the companies of the Old Continent and support the development and diffusion of new technologies for a more modern agriculture». A very effective synthesis of the mission of his mandate, the one made by Anthony Van der Ley.

And those of the former president

«I wish good luck to my successor, Anthony Van der Ley», says Richard Markwell. «For the first time in the recent history of Cema the Presidency is assumed by a top manager of an equipment manufacturing company. I am sure that this will bring new energy into the action of the Association».

Tractors market

Registrations amounted to 2,154,000 units, an increase of 13 percent compared to 2016 (1,903,000 units). India takes the lead, followed by China. The Indian market requested approximately 660 thousand tractors (plus 16%), while 490 thousand went to the Chinese market (plus 16%). The American market absorbed 220 thousand (plus 4%) and 190 thousand moved to Europe (plus 13 percent). Double-digit increases are common in fast-growing markets such as India and China (countries that alone account for half of the total number of tractors sold worldwide). But this growth in Europe is anomalous.

Malavolti explains

«In fact, this result is only partly linked to the recovery of agricultural incomes in Europe», explained the President of FederUnacoma Alessandro Malavolti. «It is, instead, due in large part to the effects of the Mother Regulation, the community legislation that introduced from this year new standards for the machines and that pushed the manufacturers, at the end of 2017, to carry out promotional campaigns, pushes and early registrations for the vehicles left in stock».

The effects of this policy are macroscopic in Germany, Austria and the Netherlands (respectively plus 19, plus 20 and plus 23 percent). This increases, as mentioned, only partially correspond to actual sales. Particularly noteworthy is the data on registrations in Italy, where 2017 closes with an increase for tractors of 23.8 percent. Anyway, the actual levels of spare parts of the fleet remain far below the real needs of the primary sector.
