At the 2022 edition of the Cannes Yachting Festival we experienced two things we are used to: the mugginess and the buzz among the stands.

Cannes 2022: lots of people and news. MAN V12X

Obviously we’re going to take about the engines’ makers news, of which we show you a short review, starting from MAN Engines. The Lion throws down the gauntlet to Caterpillar and mtu, raising the V12 power bar from 2000 hp to 2200 hp. “We are opening up new opportunities for shipyards with this next generation of engines. The MAN V12X can not only top existing applications, but also power new larger yachts and superyachts,” states Reiner Roessner, Head of Sales at MAN Engines. According to the German company, Among other things, the wall thicknesses of the crankcase have been increased at significant points, its bolt connection between the upper and lower parts of the case has been optimised and a new crankshaft with larger bearing diameters has been installed. A great deal of attention is also paid to the findings from numerous test bench trials with correspondingly long running times and the experience gained from trials at customers on the water. In addition, findings from the E3872 stationary gas engine developed in parallel complement the development.

Rolls-Royce Power Systems

In Friedrichshafen, the ecological transition passes mainly through two ways: hybridisation of the engine room and alternative fuels, in particular methanol. According to Rolls-Royce, the company and yacht builder Sanlorenzo plan to develop and build a large motor yacht with a methanol engine propulsion system able to run carbon-neutrally on ‘green’ methanol. The two companies announced an exclusive memorandum of understanding to this effect for yachts between 40 and 70 meters on the eve of the opening of the 2022 Cannes Yachting Festival. Powered by two mtu methanol engines based on the Series 4000, the Sanlorenzo yacht is expected to undertake her maiden voyage in 2026. Green methanol is climate-friendly and carbon-neutral because it is produced using solar or wind power: The first stage is to take hydrogen and synthesize it into methanol (CH3HO) using carbon and oxygen from the air. Carbon in the form of CO2 is released into the air during combustion – but no more than was taken from it during production of the fuel. As a result, the cycle is carbon-neutral. “This sees us creating a radically different yacht-owning experience”, said Denise Kurtulus, Vice President of Global Marine at Rolls-Royce Power Systems. Emissions of particulate and nitrogen oxides are also much lower than from diesel engines, making it possible to stay within NOx limits without an SCR unit treating the exhaust gases.

FPT Industrial

What happens in Turin? According to the Italian company, member of IVECO Group, FPT Industrial has decided to create its own parallel hybrid electric marine propulsion system by teaming up with Vulkan Hybrid Architect, a division of the Vulkan Group, a leading high-tech drivetrain and vibration control technology supplier, active in the Marine, Industry & Energy, Refrigeration & A/C sectors. Vulkan Hybrid Architect is a highly skilled systems integrator, capable of developing tailor-made solutions for shipyards and owners: FPT Industrial has chosen Vulkan to carry out the engineering and deliver a turnkey integrated hybrid-drive propulsion system package.
Compact Parallel Hybrid is the most promising architecture option for both commercial and pleasure vessels in the 100 to 1,000 hp market, since it is able to deliver top performance along with high levels of flexibility and efficiency.

FPT Industrial: let’s go, XC13

The XC13 surely sounds agnostic in FPT Industrial’s unofficial nomenclature; it comes, indeed, with a tripartite certification: Euro 6E (winking an eye at the upcoming Euro 7), methane gas and also biofuel, with a link to hydrogen. Andrea Abbà, FPT’s product marketing manager, told us about dialogui...

Shipping vs on-road: is LNG the only way?

The Green Shipping Challenge at COP28, held in the presence of the CEOs of the five largest shipping companies, ended in a dead heat. The comparison with the four-wheeled world is ruthless.
