To understand the 2024 edition of Data Centre Nation in Milan, one needs to know that the turnover of the data center world in 2023 is around 28 billion Euros. Growth was 13% and will continue in double digits in 2024. Society and industry are greedy for information, cloud, ultra-connectivity, and data centers are extremely energy intensive.

A background on the Data Centre Nation Milan 2024. Starting with Isotta Fraschini Motori.

Data Center Nation Milan 2024 sounds like an strategic event for the data center industry in Italy. By providing a platform for professionals to connect, share insights, and explore the latest innovations, it plays a vital role in advancing the sector. A combination of networking, knowledge sharing, and hands-on experience makes Data Center Nation Milan a must-attend event for anyone involved in the Italian data center community. We saw the station of Isotta Fraschini, which comes to this market with a 12-cylinder and a 16-cylinder. The Italian company enters these applications not only with its existing portfolio but with two trump cards: the synergy with Fincantieri and the new engine platform, which is upcoming in few years. This challenge will be met with articulated solutions involving digitization and flexibility to the final users. Right from the start, HVO represents an ally in decarbonization. A strategy shared by two other distinguished exhibitors in the Milan Data CentreNation 2024: Rolls-Royce Power Systems and Cummins.

Cummins plays its significant role

The American company is a world leader in generator sets to ensure uninterrupted service of data centers. Since they are manufacturers of the engine, alternator and the entire system, they can sell the finished design to users, with a turnkey package. The range for data centers starts from 1,675 kVA up to the largest sizes, so from QSK 50 to QSK 95. They also cover smaller data centers, with 900/1,000 kVA machines, for example with the 23-liter. The “zero emissions” variant is given by the BES, storage systems, with lithium batteries or with fuel cells, on hydrogen they are pushing a lot. Again, Cummins puts these technologies to onroad as well as any other application.

Rolls-Royce Power Systems is both with and without “plug”

Rolls-Royce has established itself as one of the top suppliers of emergency power systems for data centers globally. Over the years, they have provided approximately 5 GWe of emergency power generators to the data center market, reflecting their significant presence to ensuring uninterrupted operations in this critical mission. The German company is able to offer solutions powered by the 2000 series and the 4000 series. The mtu 1600 engines and Series 4000 are already approved for HVO. With the manufacturer-certified Extended Test Run Interval solution for mtu Series 4000 diesel gensets, customers can extend their testing from once a month to every three months under specified conditions. The solution is already available as an upgrade solution for existing systems (refit) and will be available as an option for new gensets (option fit) beginning in 2024. Among the many ways followed, Rolls-Royce is also focusing on the rapidly growing battery storage market. This is evidenced by the EnergyPack, which follows a modular approach, with batteries capable of delivering up to 2,000 kVA, in multiple configurations. A miniature model of the EnergyPack, which well represents the layout and how it works, was at the DCN in Milan.

FPT Industrial: let’s go, XC13

The XC13 surely sounds agnostic in FPT Industrial’s unofficial nomenclature; it comes, indeed, with a tripartite certification: Euro 6E (winking an eye at the upcoming Euro 7), methane gas and also biofuel, with a link to hydrogen. Andrea Abbà, FPT’s product marketing manager, told us about dialogui...
