Volvo Construction Equipment is fully committed to the Swedish group’s mission, and cannot avoid it, to electrify its range, starting with medium to low power machines. Two years ago, we reported on the investment in the production of electric wheel loaders at the Arvika plant in Sweden. Now, we’ll rely on Volvo CE’s own account to understand what has changed.

Volvo Construction Equipment ‘s Relaunch Six Years After Initial Introduction

Six years after their initial launch at Bauma 2019, Volvo CE brought the new generation of electric compact excavators and wheel loaders to the 2025 edition of the exhibition. This includes models like the ECR25 Electric, L20 Electric, and L25 Electric.

The new ECR25 Electric excavator boasts double the operating time compared to its predecessor. This significant improvement comes from upgrading from a 20 kWh to a 40 kWh lithium-ion battery, providing up to eight hours of runtime for typical applications. Notably, the charging time remains unchanged despite the larger battery, and the machine’s overall weight has been reduced.

And the battery capacity?

The L20 Electric wheel loader now features a 21% increase in standard battery capacity, bringing it in line with its larger sibling, the L25 Electric. An optional 56 kWh battery further boosts capacity by 40% compared to the previous generation. Both the L20 Electric and L25 Electric models also benefit from simplified charging procedures.

The ECR25 Electric will be available in selected European markets, including Germany, France, Great Britain, Norway, the Netherlands, and Sweden, starting in the first quarter of 2026. The L20 Electric and L25 Electric models will also be available in specific European markets. Customers will be able to order these machines later this year, with deliveries expected to begin by the end of the year.
