After the deferral from April to October, Bauma is approaching and the Media Dialog is the proof. What did we gather at the International Congress Centre München?

All the media gathered in Munich waiting for Bauma 2022

Deutz and MAN Engines won’ attend to. Despite the boom in CE, the mood of the event was low profiled, meeting space, exhibitors and journalists practically halved compared to the previous edition. The OEMs are passing on the watchword ‘electricity’, in a conjuncture that testifies to the criticality of this commodity, with blackouts in sequence in main European urban areas and beyond. Be that as it may, there are glimmers of resilience, to use an cool word, for the ICE, after the death sentence decreed by the European Parliament.

Kubota

Kubota will unveil a completely new engine, which will borrow the contents of the D902K, the other flagship product we will see at the end of October. There will also be the V5009, which was awarded Diesel of the year at Bauma in 2019, and the micro-hybrid, the greenest translation of “Rudolf’s word” among the tools at Osaka’s disposal, in addition to the opening to e-fuel and HVO. Without hiding the inclination towards hydrogen.

Hatz

Even not too far from here, in Ruhstorf, there is confidence in the capabilities of the diesel cycle. Hatz will present the only engine under 19 kilowatts with a diesel particulate filter, a forward-looking choice not imposed by any emission regulations right now. An update that completes the three-year old upgrade, when the single-cylinder engine was presented in an electronic version. Hatz’s focus will increasingly shift to service. For example, Messe München will be the fifth to announce Performance Tracking, which works with electronics to send data to other fleet management systems via a standardised interface, and the IoT dashboard, for fleet management. Not forgetting the contribution of Inecosys, with whom, over the past nine months, they have been crossing expertise on a demonstrator that combines Hatz’s application expertise and Inecosys’s knowledge on battery electric drives.

Kohler

Kohler is on its way to became from engines to energy solutions provider. Here too, the diesel cycle engines remain strategic, beyond the deadline imposed by the European Union. The request for EPA type approval for the HVO on the Kohler engines, which are already recognized as compliant in Europe, proceeds in this direction. Also in the sign of the thermal will be the unveiling of a new version of the hybrid that will flank the HEM, with direct coupling between diesel and electric engines, perfectly suitable to applications such as aerial platforms and THs. The version we will learn about will involve clutch engagement between the two engines, so as to operate in full electric mode. The cooperation with Kurtis is going on.

Yanmar

We ideally return to Osaka, this time to the Yanmar side, and the tune changes. Despite the policy of continual improvement of the diesel technology, and the efficiency of the after-treatment system, the thirty-third Bauma will mark the Japanese engine maker’s electric turn. Batteries will end up in the spotlight, being the central component of the electric architecture. The Yanmar battery factory under construction in the Netherlands is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year. Yanmar’s path is that of a system integrator.

Volvo Penta

The last engine manufacturer to set up the banquet for the traditional B2B meeting is Volvo Penta. After the postponement of the Volvo Group’s combined strategy of 2021, which was intended to put the Swedes into the Olympus of energy transition, “frozen” by the pandemic, it will finally be time for the electric powertrain. A solution currently operating in a terminal tractor, to be precise within the Tico partnership, which Volvo Penta will showcase at Bauma in its versatility and modularity. The commitment to alternative technologies is not limited to electrification. Development continues on both engine and fuel cells, in the common denominator of hydrogen, and alternative fuels. The latter made headlines at the recent Sweden Rock Festival: nine gensets powered by the D16 ran on 100 per cent HVO. In Scandinavia, HVO is derived almost exclusively from forestry residues.
